Waiting for Inspiration

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008 | Resources

Lately it seems that I’ve run across more sources for cool inspiration than I have time to work with right now:

  • A recent thread on our host RetroRemakes pointed me to scans of Amstrad Action, an old Magazine that included BASIC type-ins. Some of them utalizes functions specific to the Amstrad, but some could easily be converted. I’ve got some more farming to do in this area, but so far I’ve found:
    • Magizine Editor, a resource manager not unlike Ruler
    • a tiny Etch-a-Sketch program
    • GIGO, a conversation simulator somewhat like Eliza
    • A ton of very small graphics demo that maybe will eventually be ported over. (I love AA’s reward program.)

“Graphics?” you say. “Cymon’s Games doesn’t do graphics.” “Not yet,” is my witty reply.

  • Another thread, this time on the TIGSource forums, showed me how little code it takes to get a some cool effects out of both Alegro and SDL, I’m going to have to include tutorial for getting started and start fiddling with those libraries post haste. I was especially impressed with the ray tracer, tho I’d really like to see it fleshed out with at least a “press Q to quit” functionality.

If there are any avid programmers out there who feel inspired to contribute the only guidelines I have for code contributions is that the code C/C++ and be self contained, no referencing outside files that would need to be downloaded. But other than that I’d love to see your programs on Cymon’s Games. Don’t make me beg. Again.

Put my finger on another one. The website World of Spectrum maintains a listing of all spectrum games produced and if you search for just the ones by Sinclair User Magazine all off them were type-ins and so you can scroll down and see a gif of the original listing. Fantastic.

Ooh, here’s a good one. http://www.dunnington.u-net.com/public/basicgames/ has a basic listing (in plain text no less) of a game called Star Trader which seems to be a multiplayer trading simulation. I’ll have to check that one out.
