June Review
Monday, July 7th, 2008 | News
Wow, just wow. I just took a look at the stats for the site and June was the best month so far for Cymon’s Games. I was actually unprepared for the spike. I’ve been doing quite a bit behind the scene to improve the site so I thought I’d make mention of a few things.
Scroll to the bottom if you just want some geeky humor.
First of all I’ve added voting to the programs. So if you use a program and like it please feel free to vote on it. I’d like to encourage people to rate the programs and not the posts, and while I realize there’s going to be a lot of single stars, I hope this will allow for some reckoning of viewer favorites. Personally, I can’t stop playing Alleytris.
I’ve been trying to focus on my frontpage and while I still don’t have a satisfactory method of keeping the latest program at the top of the page like I’d like, I have started using the more tag more often so that you see less on the front page. In addition the format for the programs has changed. However, since I’m not using any slight of hand (yet) I have to change all past programs manually. I may look into slight of hand.
I’ve changed the under used Columns tag and migrated the three posts in that category to Editorial. Now the difference is semantic, but I hope to use that tag more often to write things that are perhaps less related to the things I had in mind that Columns would be about (because for the most part that’s been covered) and more on my personal ramblings and musings about whatever I want. I’ll try to keep it at least peripherally related.
I’ve also added a tag for Programming Resources. I figure there’s no point writing new tutorial when the internet is packed with them. I’ll just link to them when I find them.
I’ve been given permission to write posts on RetroRemakes, which could be the reason for the spike in traffic. Watch me not complain.
On an unrelated not a coworker of mine shot me a picture of a math problem in Portuguese. Looking for the link where he found it I found the same problem in English with added commentary. I thought it was funnier before, but I’m a minimalist when it comes to my humor. Still, here’s the joke:
Get it?
I used Google’s Image search for “math Jokes” to find that one and of course came across many others. My favorate was from MIT’s website. Art of Problem Solving Forum had a pretty good thread, be sure to check out page 2 too. (A number of repeated jokes there. But really, how many math jokes are there?)
Thanks everyone for making this site a success. And remember to tell everyone else you know about Cymon’s Games because word of mouth is the best advertising, and around here it’s the only advertising.

That explains that resource page keep popping up in my feed reader today I wondered what was happening.
I think the spike in traffic is happening all over at the moment. I thought it was just links to my google goggles that caused a spike in my hits but when I checked I’ve been linked to more times in the last 24 hours than ever from this site and I’m in the top 20 for Tour De France predictions on several search engines that get their results from google.co.uk it seems the stars are in alignment just as you guys had a holiday weekend and one of the largest international sporting events of the year kicks off.
Must remember to predict each event in the Olympics 2 days before they take place :)

Although saying that I did get hacked by an automated script looking for holes in my wordpress setup. My wp_config.php had the wrong permissions which is how it got me and the file it affected so check your setup to make sure it’s secure.

Nice site! I loved (and still have) Ahl’s Basic Computer Game books, and I’m glad to see someone doing the same kind of thing! I’ll have to see if I can scratch together a contribution.
Nice art too!

Thanks for the tip, Sparkes. Fortunately the permissions were good.
[Wrings hands in anticipation] Keeping an eye on Daniel.
