Favicon Contest - Winner Bence Dobos
Monday, September 15th, 2008 | News
The polls are closed for the favicon contest. The final standings are:
by Bence Dobos (37%, 17 Votes)
by 9572AD (35%, 16 Votes)
by Michael Tysoe (17%, 8 Votes)
Stephen Parkes (11%, 5 Votes)
So Bence Dobos’ design wins by 1 vote, which I’m actually happy with. I didn’t vote myself but it’s the one I would have voted for had I allowed myself to. Congratulations Bence. All the entries were top notch and worthy of mention. Thank you to 9572AD, Michael Tysoe, and Stephen Parkes for being a part of the contest.
Now the focus is going to be contributions. I’m going to be as annoying as PBS in asking for your support. I need your help to keep the site running. So in the vein of pledge drives let me give you some boring statistics. As of this moment I have 4 programs queued up for the site and another 13 programs ready. Of that I have written 14 of them myself. That’s 17 more weeks of programs or until min January. I think we can all see how urgent this problem is.
Wait, mid-January? Hmm, it seems I still have some time.
Still, excepting a few they’re not the quality of programs I’d like to see on the site. If you like programs like Star Merchant or better these sort of programs take time. And as much as I’d love if it were possible to do this full time I have to find a way to squeeze Cymon’s Games into a schedule filled with work, family, and the occasional personal activities (I’m talking about video games here). I’m dedicated to making Cymon’s Games the best it can be, but I’m only one guy. That’s why I need you to make Cymon’s Games the very best it can be.
So to show you what Cymon’s Games could, be for the next few weeks I have a run of programs. All of these programs are high quality and only one of which is from me. The rest are by contributors like you.
Even if all you program is the basic sort of thing you’d turn in for homework in a beginning programming class, we’ve got lots of those and would love to add yours to it. So don’t be afraid, don’t be shy, jump in join our family of contributors.
If you contribute a program you will receive your very own link on the side bar. This isn’t just a kudos on the front page to be ignored by everyone. Your link will be on every page of the site. When that link becomes old and I need to make room for new links you won’t be forgotten because you will be remembered on a commemorative links pages.
If you can’t contribute a program you can help grow Cymon’s Games with a link. There are many sites that I’d love to be mentioned on but I don’t feel right invading unsolicited. But you may be just the person to share Cymon’s Games with others. A paypal donation using the simple button on the side bar is also a great way to support the site. If you’re as broke as I am simply being active on the site, commenting on posts and sending me encouraging e-mails are also great ways to support Cymon’s Games.

Ha! My very own vote tipped the scales. That’s good, because I like Bence’s succinct design for a favicon better than the other busy ones — including my own.

I loved the whole type in thing back in the 80’s. I subscribed to Antic and Analog and maybe even Compute back in the early and mid 80’s. One thing that is missing is the beginner tutorials. They would hand hold you through some of the concepts like basic graphics and sound so you had a spring board for experimentation. I have been looking at PDcurses but it’s not clicking. If some of you who have the time and skill could share some of your knowledge with those of us who lack such skills but like to play with this, I for one would be extremely grateful. I do want to thank all of the people who have submitted, and I think the website is first rate.
Thanks for everything, David.

Lately I’ve been putting my responses to comments into others’ comments, but I think for this one I’ll actually respond here. I’ve mentioned that I don’t do tutorials, but that’s mostly because I’m just one guy and there are tutorials out there, tho come to think of it I’ve never seen any for PDCurses.
Part of me would love to be doing tutorials, but that would only be possible if someone were paying me to do this full time or Kinkos started offering human cloning services.
One thing I do want to do is put together a PDCurses reference card (which reminds me of a reference I failed to mention already). I was planning on doing it for the PDCurses book, but maybe I’ll make getting that together a priority. I’ve got so many priorities right now, but I think I can get on this sooner rather than later.

Hey, I appreciate everything that everyone who contributes is doing. I also know what you mean about not having time to do things. I have a full time job, a full time mortgage and two kids. If I had more time I could probably do it myself so I thank everyone who has already posted stuff. I just thought if someone needed a challenge I’d throw that one out. Well, off to mow the lawn, and once again thanks for the great work guys.
David.
